Practice makes perfect. In this class you’ll practice reading, outlining, drafting, and revising to the end of developing your skills, understanding, and confidence in academic writing. Research. You’ll learn how to treat academic writing as a craft, including how to write to check understanding, clarity thought, remember and as a problem of communications and socialization into academic communities. Genres. You’ll learn about the expectations of academic writing, the genres, and gain practice in the forming of proper research questions, surveying relevant literatures, handling evidence and argument, and how it is that business writers talk the talk. Becoming tech savvy. You’ll learn how to use of bibliographic databases (Mendeley), organize heaps of materials and complex workflows on your PC, and how to exploit the document and outlining features of MS Word painlessly. Resources. Each week, you’ll add to your database of relevant style sheets, advice on academic and professional language, and helpful websites for academic writing and so model and collect resources for a comprehensive understanding of the field of academic writing. Plus, each week we will set aside time to revise the class plan and practice “ask me anything.” The essential text for this class is The Craft of Research, by Booth, Colomb, and Williams.
